Thinking about getting down on one knee and popping the question?

Congratulations!!! I’m so excited for you.

Planning the perfect marriage proposal in Rhode Island can be pretty daunting. Where to even start?

Below are some tips on how to plan a surprise marriage proposal that will not only allow you to look back on one of the biggest days of your life forever — but also score some serious points with your future in-laws.

1. Pick the perfect location

This is arguably the most important part of planning the proposal. You should choose a spot that is special to you as a couple. Something that means something to you!

Maybe it’s where you had your first date, or where you went on your first vacation together.

Rhode Island has amazing and unique proposal locations. From picturesque and secluded beaches, to urban areas in and around Providence. There’s something for everyone.

2. Talk with your partner’s loved ones first

If you’re planning on keeping the proposal an absolute surprise, you’re going to need help from their friends and family. Chat with them ahead of time to make sure they’re available to help out on the big day. You can get them to help out by getting the correct ring size or to schedule a manicure a day or two before.

3. Choose the right photographer

For such an important occasion, you’re going to want to make sure you have the right photographer to capture the moment. Not to mention the ring pictures and portraits after.

You’ll want to look for someone who specializes in surprise proposals. This way you can be sure they know all angles to get those perfect shots.

I have years of experience photographing surprise proposals and would be honored to capture yours.

4. A few more tips

  • Keep your pockets empty during the photo shoot and proposal. Leave your phone in the car or ask me to hold on to your stuff during your shoot if possible. Your photos will look slightly better with no rectangular phone or wallet outline on your pants.

  • Prepare and practice what you are going to say. Even if you don’t plan on giving a long speech. Knowing what you are going to say and what words you are going to use will only make you feel better, less stressed, and more confident.

  • Generally speaking, the best place to keep the ring on the day of is the pocket inside of your jacket. If you’re not wearing a jacket, try to keep the ring in the trunk of your car and then pop it in your back pocket as you get to the proposal location.
